How do I change Mixed fraction into improper fraction?

The problem is. John completes a race in 9 1/3 minutes (9 1/3 is a mixed fraction!) and Steve finishes the same race in 7 3/4 minutes. How many seconds after steve finishes the race does john complete the race?
