Can't Genesis be seen as a metaphor?

Revelation is seen as a metaphor. And yes, I know it's a "vision" story, but still; look at the elements of the Creation story; a rib, a fruit, a garden, fall from grace, a serpent...I mean, it sounds to me like a symbolic story. Can't it all be symbolic? It sounds that way to me, in which case, evolution has more than enough room to fit into it.
