How do you know what each peak mean in the m spectrum?

i have the ethanol and propano m spetrum and i know the process which occurs within the m sptrometer and i also know that each peak represents the ions and the number of time it hits the detector but what im still confuse is how the hell do we know the componets of each peak ?
