Was El Dorado ever found or is it truly just a myth?

I am planning on writing a fictional book about El Dorado and have looked every where and can not find anything that states if El Dorado was ever found or if it really exisits. How did people first find out about El Dorado? Did some aztec talk about it but it never found or proven real? I need to know these things before i can begin to write the story
